PARA BAILARINES DE TANGO

There is no more technically demanding social dance than tango. Axis, balance, pivots, turns, changes of direction, the unnatural forwardness that drives the dance. All of these are addressed beautifully in the classic form of ... BALLET.

What separates this class from an ordinary ballet class is that it is taught from the perspective of a tango dancer looking only for what he or she needs and not wasting time on all the “other stuff”. The bar and floor work are kept simple. Each class varies just slightly from the the other. This allows the dancer the luxury of concentrating on pure technique and how it applies to their dance- not unnecessary choreography. But what puts this class in another category of it’s own is it’s creator and presenter: Sharon Hillman. There are very few teachers who are good dancers and very few dancers who are good teachers. There are even fewer that can communicate with the weathered wisdom of a lifetime in this art, complimented with the sciences of anatomy, kinesioilogy and an extraordinary personal insight into exercise therapy and rehabilitation. Combine all these skills with her carefully crafted curriculum and one has a rare opportunity to fast track their dance to a completely new technical level.

Comments and Commendations:

As a lead and tango teacher, I find that posture and balance are the two most important things to work on if one wants to be a better dancer. Sharon's classes precisely focus on the technical and physical elements needed to acquire both. What I have learned with her plays an important role in my own teaching. Her expertise and constant attention helped me to develop a better relation to the dance floor and thus to improve my technique in turns and walks.

I wanted to write to you to thank you for your generosity and the great value of what you taught us. Introducing the ballet techniques in our tango really changed the way we dance. We also "use" it a lot in our classes, trying to give our students the means to acquire more balance, more control... And we never quit ballet: we are now taking two classes a week.

Sharon Hillman's "Tecnica, Tecnica, Tecnica" workshop offers a completely fresh, unique approach to tango preparation, conditioning and comprehension. The pace is brisk and challenging and her "ballet bar"-side manner with students is warm and encouraging. Her ability to combine the foundations of classical dance, Pilates and yoga enhances tango comprehension in an extraordinarily rich and thorough way. Always emphasizing the fundamental elements of tango, Sharon's work is about achieving a strong and forward axis, the dancer's connection to the floor for balance, beauty and strength, and the use of momentum and energy in turns and the lead. I highly recommend it to tango dancers who teach, perform or those who simply dance a LOT and want to expand and deepen their understanding of movement and improve their quality of dance.
